THE European Union (EU) has told the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect that it cannot force the Union out of Nigeria, especially the North.
Briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Head of EU delegation to Nigeria, Dr David MacRae, said the killings and the insecurity in the country caused by terrorists’ activities of the sect would not make the EU abandon Nigeria, especially the North of the country, where he observed there is great deprivation.
“It will be cowardly for EU to pull out of Boko Haram states. We are not going to be intimidated. We have to face up to them.
“We are not going to allow them defeat us. We will bring whatever experience we have in tackling the challenge,” MacRae assured.
He called on all Nigerians to stand firm and resolve not to allow the terrorists defeat the nation.
The EU is moving its 2012 annual film festival away from Abuja to Jos, Kaduna and other southern cities like Port Harcourt, and Lagos but he added that “the wide reception which this festival had enjoyed before now has encouraged us to extend the show to other Nigerian cities.”
“The EU is committing €98 million (about N20 billion) to support the justice, anti-corruption and drug sectors in Nigeria with the overall objective of promoting good governance, enhancing transparency and accountability, combating corruption, strengthening the justice sector and addressing drug-related issues in Nigeria.”
He also announced that the EU was planning to spend another 20 million euro to support the Nigeria electoral system between 2012 and 2015 in addition to its traditional numerous micro projects across the country.
MacRae also condemned the recent bombing of media houses by the Boko Haram sect and called for the apprehension and trial of those who carried out the attack. He condoled families of the victims of the bombing, saying the EU rejects all forms of terrorist acts and violence.
