Security officials on Saturday arrested eight members of National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Nasarawa State with four stuffed ballot boxes during the Awe North constituency by-election. They Corpers were caught in an attempt to submit the stuffed ballot boxes at the collation centre.
It was reported that youths suspected to be political thugs of the CPC reportedly snatched the four ballot papers and other electoral materials meant for Madaki, Tunga and Kanje/Abuni wards when the materials were on transit to the by-election.
Nasarawa State Residential Electoral Commissioner, Ahmad Makama, confirmed the incident to journalists on Sunday in Lafia, the state capital.
Consequently, the PDP has called on the appropriate authorities to cancel the by-election and organise a transparent poll in the constituency. “Village heads and district heads served as agents or presiding officers in places like Baure, Abuni and Tunga during the by-election.
“Even where elections were said to have taken place, it was stuffing of ballot boxes, thumb printing of ballot papers by electoral officials (corps members) who were caught on the act as masterminded by traditional rulers and the transitional chairman of Awe local council,” he said.
