Chairman Board of Trustee of the Original Inhabitants Development Association of Abuja (OIDA), Alhaji Abubakar Kaura Wodi, has demanded for 40 per cent of all land sales within the federal capital for indigenes of the territory.

Wodi, who was speaking at a world press conference on Sunday in Abuja, also demanded 20 percent of all sales accrued from allocable land within the FCT for the indigenes.

According to him, the demand is part of the association’s memoranda submitted to the national assembly for the constitutional amendment and reversal of the social injustice against the original inhabitants of the FCT. He observed that the entire land mass of the territory which is about 8,000 square kilometres that host the city of government is 12 times the size of Washington in USA.

“Unlike other citizens in Nigeria, we are also discriminated against when seeking admission to academic institutions for ourselves or our children. And as a law abiding organisation whose objective are to help foster a better society, we took off  by presenting a memo to help legislators proffer lasting solutions that will correct existing anomalies currently intimidating the original inhabitants of the FCT,’’ he explained.

He however noted that  in the group’s proposed memoranda for the review of the 1999 Constitution, which is  before the National Assembly, they are seeking for a Court of Appeal interpretation of Section 299 of the 1999 Constitution to determine the status of Abuja, among others.

“In pursuant thereto, we demand that the constitution should also provide for the office of a democratically elected Governor of the FCT, who will be elected by the indigenes/residents to govern the territory,’’ he added.

The board chairman also criticised the process where an unelected minister from any part of the country administers the federal capital territory.
