Secondary school students will continue to get free textbooks and library resource, federal government has said.
This after millions of naira worth of school materials were distributed to primary and junior secondary school students in the North west region by the Universal Basic Education Commission.

Minister of state for education, Nyesom Wike said government would “continue to intervene in basic education through its agencies, especially in the provision and upgrading of critical infrastructure, the training and retraining of teachers as well as the provision of free textbooks and library resource materials.”

"All that Mr President needs from you is sincere cooperation as the unprecedented investment he has so far graciously made in re-positioning the education sector will soon bear much expected fruits,” he said at the flagoff of distribution of materials for the north east in Katsina.

“Fragment”

The flagoff held in Katsina, the first state to begin accessing UBEC funds this year.

Wike said provision of free textbooks was only a fragment of government’s comprehensive intervention in basic education.

Early in July, UBEC distributed 2.3 million primary school textbooks for English, Mathematics and basic science and technology for the south west region in Akure.

Some 672,600 library materials were also given to junior secondary schools in the zone.

Katsina released N832 million in counterpart funding obligations to get UBEC funding this year, said state governor Ibrahim Shema.

UBEC funding this year totals more than N8 billion, according to data on the commission’s website.

Each state is allotted some N218 million to be accessed only when matched by their counterpart funds.
