The Egun Community, which lives on the Lagos lagoon that is currently being demolished by the State Government, today trooped out to the Governor’s office at Alausa to protest their displacement and the demolition of their wooden shacks on the Makoko stilt.
Addressing the community, Governor Babatunde Fashola said that some individuals, whom he did not identify, are benefiting from the sufferings of the residents as they live on the water, and are receiving grants from international charities and funding bodies.
He told the age long water-float residents that occupants of the demolished areas on water are largely people from Cameroun, Republic of Benin and Togo.
The Governor, after condoling with the Baale, Steven Ajih, over the killing by a policeman of his Assistant Timothy Azinpono two days ago, did not say what his administration is doing to bring the killer policeman to book, but he opened his doors to a conversation with the Baale on the boundaries of the demolition exercise on the waterfront.
The demolition began on the ancient Makoko waterfront last Monday, after officials of the Lagos State Government and men of Kick Against Indiscipline had issued a 72 hours’ notice to the residents. Aside from the use of milling machines, they also used fire to destroy some of the structures.
A protest broke out on Saturday when the demolition squad extended their activities beyond the portions previously marked for the action. That was when Azinpono, the Assistant to the Baale, was abruptly shot by a policeman and killed.

AS LONG AS I DO NOT SUPPORT THE KILLING OF THAT INDIVIDUAL BY POLICE CORPORAL, I THOUGHT THE STATE GAVE THEM ALOT OF TIME TO RELOCATE? THOUGH THE GOV HAS TO STILL SEE THE END TO THE CORE

Reacting from the headline, i would call it a sad situation for getting rid of the past without providing for the future. These are Nigerians that have struggled from little scratches and live with little or poor support. Yet at the giving of an alternative, they should have a say about any change that would affect their life style.
I personally embrace the Makoko environment to remain in Lagos. It gives the city the uniqueness it has and is a good attraction site to foreign persons. I would say that it would be a good development for the Lagos Governmental office to be occupied with supporting those living in the Makoko quarters and finding a way to better facilities that tend to pollute the direct environment.

HOW CAN YOU JUST GO AND DEMOLISHED SOMEBODY'S HOUSE WITHOUT PROVIDING FOR HIM ANOTHER PLACE TO STAY? OR, DO YOU THINK THAT EVERY BODY IN NIGERIA HAVE MONEY AS YOU HAVE? DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS EVERY BODY IN NIGERIA CAN EASILLY PROVIDE 3Q MEAL EVERY DAY? AND YOU ARE THERE ADDING FUEL INSIDE BURNING FIRE. VERY SOON NOW, WE WILL HEAR THAT SOMEONE HAS COMMIT SUSIDE. ALL THESE ARE YOUR FAULT, I KNOW YOU ARE DOING A GOOD JOB BUT, PLEASE TRY AND UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION OF THE MASSES THAT PUT YOU IN THAT SIT, AND NOT TO DO TO THEM ANYHOW YOU LIKE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE IN POWER. ONE INNOCENT POOR MAN HAS LOST HIS LIFE JUST BECAUSE OF THIS. IS THIS NOT A REASON ENOUGH FOR YOU TO LEAVE THAT PLACE FOR A WILE?? MR FASHOLA, TAKE IT EASY OO!

Mr.Governor please don't destroy the respect I have for you, your government should contact the international communities not to release any money for anybody who claim to represent this people and if there is any aid coming in for them through your government, please give it to them now.
I believe you can help them to erect modern structures on the same waterfront, Chinese and Japenese building engineers knows how to construct on water, I know it will cost your government nothing to do that for them cos MAKOKO IS AN ANCIENT WATERFRONT . Then you can make a programme for them on how much they will be paying every month to buy the houses in a cheaper price, each appartment's price must not be more than 200,000.
if u attack my papa house, I'll retaliate but if you are peace loving,I will embrace you
