The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has called on Nigerians not to condemn him because his son, Mahmud, is undergoing trial.
Apart from Mahmud, Nasir, the son of a former National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, was also among the oil marketers who were arraigned at a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for oil subsidy fraud on Thursday.
The PDP chairman said that his son, as an adult, should be able to defend himself in the case.
Tukur told journalists in Abuja on Friday through his Special Adviser on Monitoring, Mr. Bernard Mikko, that there was no need to diminish his person because of the perceived ‘sins’ of his son.
He said it would be wrong to visit the son’s sin on him, insisting that as an adult and managing director of a publicly quoted firm, his son should be allowed to carry his own cross.
He said, “Our laws are clear and even a primary school pupil knows we are all presumed innocent until proven otherwise and convicted by a competent court of law.
“The sons of the past and current PDP chairmen are no exception. Mahmud is the son of Bamanga Tukur, the current PDP national chairman, but since the reported arraignment of the former, the trial seemed to have not only shifted from the court to the media, but also shifted from the son to the father.”
Quoting from the Bible to support the position of Tukur, his assistant said, “What is happening now is in contrast to Deuteronomy 24 16, which says ‘the father shall not be put to death for his children and the children for fathers, every man shall be put to death for his own sin.’
“Also, Ezekiel 18:20 said, “The soul that sinneth shall die. The son shall not bear iniquity for his father and neither shall the father bear iniquity for the son.
“These biblical verses underscore the points by stating that every individual is accountable for his or her own action.”
He said there was no way a parent could take medication to cure his sick child.
He asked those clamouring for Tukur’s sacking to remember that in August 2011, Onyango Obama, an uncle of President Barack Obama of the United States, was arrested in Boston, Massachusetts, for traffic offences.
