WIFE of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola and former deputy governor, Sarah Sosan have advocated constant training in literacy and skills development for teachers in public primary schools as a measure to improve education of pupils.

They gave the advice at the formal opening of a week-long training programme for primary school teachers in Ojodu, Lagos yesterday.   The theme of the event is “Improving Literacy Teaching Skills in Primary Schools.” It is being organised by GFR Educational Services in Ojodu area of the state.

Mrs. Fashola, who was represented by Mrs. Rhoda Ayinde, said the achievements recorded in developed nations today were made possible by their investment in the literacy development of their children at a very tender age.

She urged stakeholders in the sector to ensure that teachers are trained constantly and educational curriculum tailored towards achieving the objective of improving the country’s education.

Sosan, in her remarks, said the programme was organised to help the state improve on how teachers will be teaching in primary school.

According to her, adequate attention has not been given to education in Nigeria, adding that constant training of teachers will help improve the situations.

“We feel we can still impact education effectively. If we have to raise standard of education in this country, we have to go back to the basis and change things from what they are now,” she added.

Meanwhile, Jostiana International School in Ikotun area of Lagos has graduated 29 pupils and traced fall in standard of education in Nigeria to be multi-dimensional factors.

At its graduation and end of the year ceremony held at the school premises, a retired Professor of Educational Administration in the University of Lagos, Emmanuel Olukayode Fagbamiye, said “education is being regarded as the saviour of this nation, yet it is the worse treated, compared to other sectors of the economy. I believe that many Nigerians are justifiably apprehensive that in spite of the fact that so much money is being expended on providing social welfare services, particularly education, we are comparatively worse off in 2003 than we were in 1976 when Universal Primary Education programme was introduced nation-wide.

He added: “The cause of moral decadence and fall in standard of education in this country is multi-dimensional. Because when the head is sick, the body is also not well. So the challenges we are facing in the educational sector is from the leadership, and it has affected other sectors including, oil, agricultural, banking and likes of others.”

According to him, it is evident that education is the greatest instrument of nation building, “Nigeria, with its fame and population, is yet to come of age to solve her problems by applying knowledge in all areas because our government doesn’t listen to advice.

But if the country should move forward, the education system should be reviewed, focusing on the areas that can and will promote technical, vocational and science oriented programmes. This is not to say that Nigeria is saturated in other areas but will need to move aBosom  of other countries of the world.

“What we put in will decide what will come out of it. Education is not properly funded, teachers are not properly rewarded, as a result, you don’t find many people going into teaching. You find leftover who are not properly trained. So it is a deep sick head thing, and what do you expects? In the 60s and 70s, graduates of Nigerian universities were touted abroad. They were groomed and well prepared, but then, starting from 1977, the low profile stands of the government of that time, led to underfunding of education.”
