The Immigration Department has deported a 24-year old US Peace Corps volunteer, Jacqueline Frances, who was handed a 12-month suspended sentence by the Chipata Magistrate’s Court for trafficking in marijuana, reported the Zambia Daily Mail.

“I can confirm the Jacqueline Walsh has just arrived in Lusaka (Tuesday) but I cannot give you further details, “it quoted an Immigration Department public relations official Namati Nshinka as saying.
The convict was expected to fly back to the US Tuesday, it reported.

The Daily Mail reported that on Monday Chipata resident magistrate Sanford Ngobola gave Walsh the suspended sentence when she pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in a psychotropic substance – marijuana, weighing 313 grams.

Chipata is located over 500kilometres east of the capital Lusaka in Eastern Province.

“After the Chipata Magistrate’s Court gave her a 12 month suspended sentence, the immigration started working on the deportation warrant order to send her back to America, meaning she’ll be a prohibited immigrant in Zambia, “it quoted an unnamed source as saying.

Drug trafficking has become rampant in the southern African nation in recent months.
