The National Conscience Party (NCP) today led a protest march to the zonal office of National Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) in Alausa, Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, in condemnation of declining electricity supply and increased tariffs.

Representatives of pro-masses movements and civil society organizations also participated in the action.

During the march, some members of the public who were interviewed by SaharaReporters said they have not had electricity supply for more than two weeks in Ikeja. Others said they enjoy only a total of two hours supply per day.

Speaking at the rally, the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF) accused President Goodluck Jonathan and others in his and previous governments of taking over public property under the guise of privatization in order to take ownership of public equity, with no knowledge of what it takes to generate or supply electricity.

He alleged that they took it over in order to increase tariffs and shoot out their fangs to extort the masses.
Delivering a petition to a representative of NERC at the zonal office, NCP chairman Tanko Yunusa warned that the protest marked the beginning of several actions against extortion by the companies.

He asked that the company stop any means of estimated billing, hoarding of prepaid meters, fixed charges system and return of darkness for the payments.

He also demanded that electricity consumption meters be distributed to users for free.

A good move. This is the type of people we need to rule Nigeria.  But then again, one governor in power now was once a champion of the MASSES - look at him now - he's instructing widows to go and die!!

Its difficult to decide who is genuine when they are not ruling and in power!!
