Abuja — An Abuja upper Area court has sentenced a 22 year old job-seeker, Isiaku Mamman, to one month imprisonment for stealing one roll of Benson and Hedges cigarette.
He was reported to have stolen the cigarette from one Nnamdi Okechukwu's shop at Mopol Junction, Nyanya, Abuja.
The prosecutor, Jerry Tangshark, had earlier told the court that on August 16,2009, Nnamdi reported to the police that on the same day, while he was selling in his shop, the accused came with two others now at large to buy the said one roll of Benson cigarette valued N1,700.
The prosecutor stated further that when the complainant gave it to the accused person, he passed it to his accomplice who ran away with it, adding that he was arrested while trying to escape.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
The prosecutor told the court to try the accused summarily under section 157 of the criminal procedure code (CPC) and that the two count charge are punishable under sections 79 and 288 of the penal code law.
Based on the accused plea, Justice Salisu Garba sentenced the accused to one month imprisonment or an option of N2, 000. The judge also ordered that the accused should pay a compensation of N1,700 to the complainant.
In another case, a driver was remanded in prison custody for allegedly stabbing a policeman while trying to arrest him.
The prosecutor, Jerry Tangshak, told the court that the accused broke a bottle and stabbed the police officer, Moses Yusuf, while trying to arrest him for attempting to commit an offence, adding that during investigations, the accused confessed to have committed the offence.
The accused, who was not represented by any counsel, pleaded not guilty and requested for bail which was objected by the prosecutor, saying the accused is a habitual criminal and should not be granted bail.
Based on the prosecutor's submission, Justice Salisu Garba remanded the accused in the prison and adjourned the case to August 19, for hearing.
