Last week, a 23-year-old boy identified as Tope Abiodun, was sentenced to death by hanging by a High Court in Abuja for stealing an android LG phone valued at N87, 000 after stabbing his victim with a knife in his head. A concerned Nigerian has appealed to authorities to consider the plight of the young man due to various reasons he shared below;

Justice Chizoba Orji of Apo high court FCT Abuja jailed 23 yrs old Tope Abiodun (from Kabba Kogi state)to death by hanging for stealing an android LG phone valued at #87,000 naira ....this happened few weeks ago in a country where those that Looted billions that were meant to make life easy for such Youths from being tempted to survive through stealing are out there roaming the streets in freedom .
This is unfair to the poor and vulnerable masses ,Tope fluently speaks yoruba ,igbo and Hausa languages ,he has transformed since he was imprisoned four yrs ago,this is a lad that will assist visitors with their luggage down to cells of those they came to visit in kuje prison.
He is a good boy we can not allow to die .
I am appealing to well meaning nigerians ,clergies alike to come to his aide ,he has an ageing mother ,he was not born to see his father alive ,one can easily understand his upbringing.
Tope Abiodun committed this crime when he was 18yrs old ,he told me ,the pressure to feed with his younger siblings pushed him to do it . Probably he did that as an ignorant young boy out of the normal juvenile delinquency stage in our lives .
Godbless you as you do to help him process his case through the appeal court ,I am so sad about this because I have spent much to help this boy even though I have my issues at the end the judge gave him a very harsh sentence (death by hanging )in a case no death was recorded .
Wake up ,Good Nigerians! #HelpTope
May this also teach our young stars a lesson ! #pls share this as a way to assist him

there is an appeal process in all judgements.....however, don't excuse his violent act. .because if he had stabbed you, you won't be singing this same song about him.

YOU ARE A VERY BIG FOOL, THIS SUSPECT STAB HIS VICTIM ON THE HEAD WHICH WE DON'T KNOW NOW IF THE VICTIM IS ALIVE OR IN COMA
WHAT ARE YOU SAYING YOU IDIOT.
U're one hell of a bastard! The news didn't say he murdered someone, if the victim had died then it should have been a murder case not theft. I commented base on the information the poster provided and I'm not interested in ur freaking, stupid, senseless assumption. Now go tell that ur prostitute mama say she's a very BIG FOOL for raising a bastard. Na only ur epileptic papa I pity for this matter

This is a sad case, ignorance is no excuse against the law. Having said that, maybe they should commute it to a lesser sentence than death owing to the fact that God saved the victim.

I think he should get a lesser sentence since the victim survived the attack. I'm waiting to hear the day that same judge will hang the criminals in politics.

This is very sad development. I truly hope the lad is not hanged. Since its not a murder case and according to information, he has changed having being in jail for like 4 years before the eventual sentencing. life can be very unfair to many people, as they eventually fall into crime at young age in a bead to survive when our corrupt leaders would rather enrich them selves with the resources meant to better the lifes of the masses. Its a shame.

i don't support crime or violence but at 18 years when he committed d crime n stay in prison for 4 years is enough for the judge to limit the punishment n if first time of committing a crime, there are so many people who have committed worst crime than this and were jail but later release and gain freedom.

All d pple dt was commenting on ds issue, dat d judge is mean ds nd dat, do u all know d health situation of d man he stabbed? wat if he has lost his life, we all should be real nd judge tnz wtout bn sentimental, d man bn stabbed could be anybody's dad, brother or husband. @times we should show empathy(tryna put urself in those pple's shoes) call a spade a spade, wat he did was wrong nd deserves a severe punishment, committing such crime all in d name of he's coming from a low background or having an aged mother isn't an excuse for such act. is just lk one saying she ventured into prostitution all bcoz she's an orphan or not financially buoyant forgetting dt d are millions out there dt went through dt hardship yet d survived without such act. Pls is high time we Nigerian should stop bn sentimental in judging tnz.
