
Police operatives in Onitsha, Anambra State, have arrested a notorious robbery gang’s leader identified as Onyebuchi Ibanu Umemo, alias Alamo, whose gang has allegedly been terrorising inhabitants of the commercial city. The arrest by a combined team of policemen attached to the Central Police Station, Onitsha, and vigilante operatives, followed a distress call over a robbery incident at Egerton Road, Onitsha, where hoodlums, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, were attacking and robbing innocent citizens of their belongings.
It was gathered that the team, on arrival, spotted Alamo robbing victims and when the operatives advanced to effect his arrest, he threatened to cut one of the vigilante operatives with a machete. Police However, the operatives were said to have demobilised him by shooting him in the leg. It was further gathered that in one of the previous robbery operations allegedly carried out by Alamo and his gang before his arrest, one of their victims, Ebuka Agu, was allegedly dispossessed of his phones and cash after they inflicted machete injuries on him.
A source further hinted that Alamo had equally inflicted an injury on one Emmanuel Yusuf and two others, while trying to dispossess them of their valuables along the Old Market Road, Onitsha. Similarly, detectives from the CPS have arrested another set of gangs that specialise in using tricycles to terrorise Onitsha residents. According to a source, the gangsters, usually armed with machetes, block their victims with tricycle before robbing them. The Divisional Police Officer at CPS, Ikechukwu Egbochukwu, confirmed the arrest, but referred newsmen to Police Headquarters, Awka, for detailed information. He said Alamo was at an undisclosed hospital, following the gunshot injury he sustained while struggling with the operatives.
