Residents of the Asaba Airport View Estate, yesterday, urged Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to save them from the gully erosion cutting all internal roads in the axis.
The residents disclosed that a child and building were swept away by the roaring flood after a downpour at the weekend in the Asaba Airport View Estate
The aggrieved residents faulted government officials for paying lip services to the life and well -being of the people, saying “Every year, the erosion expands in geometric proportion and creating more damage and threat to life and properties.”
Coordinator of the affected residents, Joseph Obi, in a statement, said: “We are aware that the contract for the construction of the Asaba Airport View Estate road has been awarded alongside other link roads within the Okpanam axis yet we are perishing here without support despite our support for the government.
“As we speak, some of residents, whose houses are at the mercy of the erosion, do not know what to do; they are no longer sleeping with their two eyes closed because of the fear of the unknown. If the government can just do this street, all our fears will fly away.”
On efforts made by residents to checkmate the erosion and make the road motorable in the past years, Obi said: “The Secretary to the Delta State Government, Mr. Ukah, and other commissioners have visited the street and can confirm how we have been contributing money to make the road motorable. We are tired of government officials coming and going without doing anything about it.”
“We are here to shout out loud, to call on our passionate Governor, the Ekwueme of the Universe and the PDP Vice Presidential candidate, the Road Master of Delta State to personally intervene and deliver us from this avoidable torment.”
