The alleged killing of one Justice Ogbuehi, a Naval rating by members of the Emohua Local Vigilante Service (EMOVIS) in Oduoha, his community, has sparked protests among the youths of the area. The youths are demanding justice for Ogbuehi, who recently finished his Naval training and was in his compound assisting his mother to process cassava before his untimely death on Monday, June 19, 2023.
The killing of Ogbuehi sparked tension in Oduoha, Emohua Local Government Area, and forced the youths of the area to take their protest to a Port Harcourt-based radio station. They said that the late Ogbuehi was not a criminal and should not have been shot dead by members of EMOVIS. However, there are allegations that the deceased was a member of the gang of late kidnap kingpin Onuigwe Nwodi and was hit by a stray bullet.
But his family members disputed that claim, noting that Ogbuehi was not in any way involved in criminality, but was law-abiding. Reacting to the incident, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, the Chairman of Emohua Local Government Council, has ordered full investigation into the killing, vowing that the perpetrators won’t go unpunished. Lloyd told a Port Harcourt-based radio station that he had asked the Police and Joint Task Force to investigate how members of the group who are not constitutionally empowered to bear arms shot Ogbuehi.
Lloyd said the vigilante operatives are only expected to share intelligence and synergize with other security agencies in crime fighting, but not to bear arms. “For the fact that sometimes they (Vigilantes) carry arms in the discharge of their duties even to the knowledge of security agencies in their domain and LGAs does not make it constitutional,” he said.
