On Saturday, the remains of Peter Yunana, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who passed away during Wednesday's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match between Nigeria and South Africa, were transported out of Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. The emotional departure was witnessed by his colleagues and students at the school where he was undertaking his primary assignment.

Yunana had been one of a number of Nigerians who died on Wednesday as a result of the tension generated by the semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa.

He was deployed to teach at the Government Secondary School, Numan, where he was watching the AFCON match before he suddenly slumped and died.

His body, due for burial on Sunday in Makarfi, Kaduna State, was moved out of Yola on Saturday ahead of his burial.

A good number of his colleagues and students turned up as he was being conveyed in an ambulance from Yola enroute Makarfi.

The NYSC colleagues and GSS students and staff as well as officials of government, including the Secretary of Numan Local Government, David Belu Afremond, were at the Numan bridge, along the Yola-Gombe highway, to bid farewell to the late Yunana.

The deceased was a 26-year-old Community Health graduate of Shehu Idris College of Health Technology, Makarfi, Kaduna State.

He was registered for NYSC on November 1, 2023; and was due for discharge on October 31, 2024.

He was teaching Chemistry at GSS Numan as part of his service.
