Suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked travellers along the Damaturu-Biu highway near Mahdiya village in the Gujba local government area of Yobe State on Friday. One person was killed, and an unconfirmed number of passengers were kidnapped.
It was gathered that the terrorists laid an ambush on commercial and private vehicles plying the highway on Friday morning, attacked and abducted many travelers in six vehicles after killing one of them.
One of the travellers who escaped from the attack said that the terrorists stopped vehicles around 9am, dragged passengers out and took them away into the bush, Leadership reports.
According to the passenger, the heavily armed terrorists took position on the highway at Mahdiya village in Gujba local government area, 40 kilometers from Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
The chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Gujba Local Government Area, who addressed journalists after the incident said that some of the passengers came out of their vehicles and ran back towards Damaturu where they were coming from.
The NURTW chairman said, “Today Friday is Buni Yadi Market where thousands of people from the surrounding communities come for business, unfortunately the Boko Haram abducted them.”
Also, a credible security source who reportedly confirmed the incident said, “Information received this morning indicated that suspected Boko Haram intercepted a number of passenger vehicles coming from Maiduguri to Southern Borno through Damaturu/Buni Yadi/Biu Road.”
