Paul Onwuanibe, the Chief Executive Officer of Landmark Group, has disclosed ongoing negotiations with both the Federal and Lagos State Governments to prevent the proposed demolition of his Landmark Beach Resort for the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

Recently, the Lagos State Government issued a seven-day notice to the Landmark Group CEO regarding the demolition of a section of the Beach Resort to facilitate the coastal highway project. The affected parts of the property listed for demolition include the Beach Resort itself, Kids and Bay Arena, Members Area, and Lagos Beach Club.

In a statement posted on his verified social media page, Onwuanibe addressed concerns surrounding the potential disruption caused by the highway construction. He confirmed active discussions with various government bodies, including the Lagos State Government, the Federal and State Ministries of Tourism, and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, as well as engagement with interest groups.

Onwuanibe emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to find mutually beneficial solutions, suggesting the possibility of rerouting a portion of the coastal road to minimize the impact on existing businesses. He expressed confidence that through careful consultation, alternative routes could be identified to preserve the thriving ecosystem of Landmark Group businesses.

Highlighting the significant contribution of Landmark Group to the local economy, Onwuanibe underscored the role of over 80 diverse businesses operating within the Landmark Group ecosystem. These businesses, including many small and medium enterprises (SMEs), generate billions of Naira in annual taxes and provide employment to thousands of Nigerians.

Onwuanibe acknowledged the Coastal Road project as a commendable initiative with the potential to boost the economy but emphasized the importance of preserving Nigerian-owned businesses and maintaining Lagos as a vibrant tourism destination. He reaffirmed the commitment of Landmark Group to finding a solution that balances infrastructure development with the preservation of local businesses.

The Landmark Group CEO concluded his statement by expressing gratitude for government support over the years and expressing confidence in achieving a resolution that accommodates both the development of the Coastal Road and the interests of Nigerian businesses and citizens.
