Daddy Showkey, the renowned Nigerian singer, recently recounted a harrowing experience from his past involving gang activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State. He shared how he and a group of young men discovered a gun at a refuse dump and subsequently used it to intimidate people. This reckless behavior continued until one fateful day when they were caught and nearly lynched.
In a teaser for the upcoming episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Daddy Showkey recalled the terrifying moment when he and his gang were captured and tied up, awaiting to be set on fire. Their lives were spared by what he described as a miracle.
Reflecting on his turbulent youth, the veteran singer emphasized that his journey from such a troubled background to achieving legendary status is proof that anyone can achieve greatness with determination and hard work.
“I was in a gang back in the day. I won’t lie. Some of us found a gun where we used to pick valuables from a refuse dump in Ikorodu. We started using the gun to terrorize the area,” he said. “One day, when we were out in our usual style, someone saw us and started screaming, ‘thieves, thieves, thieves.’ Then we started running, but we were apprehended. They tied us up. They were about to burn us but we were saved miraculously.
“I am a living testimony for every young person because if I can be alive today and still become Daddy Showkey, then there’s hope for everyone.”
He also revealed the tragic fate of one of his former gang members, who was eventually caught and lynched.
