Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 general elections, recently discussed the possibility of a merger between the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an interview with NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV, Obi also touched on the potential support he might receive from Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, for the 2027 presidential election, particularly as a South-East candidate.

Obi expressed his appreciation for Atiku's supportive statements, especially regarding backing a South-East candidate for the presidency.

He highlighted his gratitude for Atiku’s willingness to support him if the presidential ticket is designated for the South-East.

However, Obi was clear that his main focus is not on personal ambition or political strategies but on the welfare of Nigeria and its citizens. He stated, “I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential.”

Regarding the potential merger between the PDP and LP, Obi showed openness to the idea, emphasizing that his support would depend on the merger's purpose. He is in favor of a merger aimed at improving governance and realizing Nigeria’s potential.

He said, “If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it.”

Obi was firm in his stance against any merger or alliance motivated solely by the desire to gain power or win elections. He stated, “If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it, I don’t want to be part of anything like that.”

Overall, Obi's comments underscore his commitment to the betterment of Nigeria, rather than the pursuit of political power for its own sake.
