
In a tragic incident on Thursday, two labourers drowned while attempting to retrieve a bucket from a well at a construction site in Ile-Ife. The incident occurred at approximately 1:09 pm opposite Ilesa Motor Park along the Ife-Ilesa Expressway.
The two men, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, were engaged to work at the construction site. According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when one of the labourers tried to recover a bucket that had fallen into the well.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the incident. Adeleke stated, “A tragic incident happened today, Thursday, 6th June 2024, opposite Ilesa Motor Park along Ife-Ilesa road, Ile-Ife around 1309 hours. Two middle-aged men from Iwo were engaged as workmen on a building project opposite Ilesa Motor Park, Ile-Ife."
Explaining the sequence of events, she added, “The unfortunate incident occurred when the two workmen were fetching water from a deep well, and the fetcher accidentally fell into the well. One of the workmen entered the well to retrieve the fetcher but got trapped and drowned. The second workman attempted to rescue him but also drowned.”
The corpses of the two men were eventually retrieved through the joint efforts of NSCDC operatives and the Federal Fire Service.
This incident underscores the dangers faced by labourers working in hazardous conditions and highlights the need for improved safety measures at construction sites. The local community and authorities are mourning the loss of the two men as investigations continue.
