The Borno State Police Command, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ahmad Bello, has called for stricter laws to prevent the withdrawal of rape and other segxwal violence cases by the victims' relatives in court.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ consultative meeting in Maiduguri, DCP Bello highlighted the issues of silence and stigmatisation faced by victims of segxwal violence.

He pointed out that many cases are withdrawn due to fear of stigmatisation, even though the victims often seek justice.

Bello proposed that laws be enacted to keep withdrawal requests under Keep In View (KIV) status for a period, allowing victims more time to make informed decisions.

He also urged UN Women and other stakeholders to support the introduction of a bill to address the gaps hindering the fight against segxwal and gender-based violence.
