Ahmed Musa, the captain of Nigeria's Super Eagles, has moved to dispel rumors suggesting he has retired from international duty, asserting his ongoing commitment to the national team.
Despite not featuring in any of Nigeria’s matches during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the team achieved runner-up status, Musa remains a pivotal figure in Nigerian football.
The former CSKA Moscow winger's last starting appearance for the national team dates back to 2021 during a World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde, where he played 67 minutes in a 2-0 victory. His most recent involvement was a brief seven-minute cameo in a friendly against Guinea in January.
Musa, who has been without a club since his contract with Turkish side Sivasspor was terminated in February, clarified his status during a media interaction following a friendly match he organized.
“I only took a brief break from the national team,” Musa explained. “But I didn’t retire or exit the team.”
His statement aims to quell speculations and affirm his ongoing availability and readiness to contribute to the Super Eagles as they prepare for upcoming international campaigns.
Musa’s role as a veteran and leader within the squad underscores his importance in Nigeria’s football landscape, despite recent challenges in his club career. His clarification is expected to reassure fans and stakeholders of his continued dedication to national team duties.
