In a tragic incident in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, two brothers have killed their half-brother and severely injured their father over accusations of witchcraft.
Residents reported that the altercation occurred when the two brothers, Haruna Idi and Sale Idi, brutally beat their half-brother, Haruna Idi, with sticks. The violence erupted when the brothers accused Haruna of witchcraft. Their 80-year-old father, Idi Hassan, was injured while attempting to rescue his son.
The spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident.
"On July 25, 2024, at about 12:30 pm, intelligence available to our command disclosed that two individuals, Haruna Idi and his 80-year-old father, Idi Hassan, from Garkon Alli village in Kiyawa LGA, had been severely beaten with sticks, resulting in serious injuries," DSP Adam stated.
Upon receiving the report, detectives from the Kiyawa Division responded promptly, transporting the victims to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital in Dutse for medical attention. Unfortunately, Haruna Idi succumbed to his injuries, while his father, suffering from a fractured hand and leg, remains hospitalized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, Ahmadu Idi, 45, and Sale Idi, 25, conspired to attack their brother based on the witchcraft allegations. During the altercation, they also injured their father, who had tried to intervene.
The suspects have been arrested and are currently in custody for further investigation. DSP Adam assured that after the investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse is completed, the suspects will be arraigned in court.
