Popular media personality Daniel Regha has publicly criticized Adedeji Adeleke, the father of Nigerian music star Davido, for donating 1 billion naira to a church.
Adeleke made the generous donation to the Centenary Endowment Fund of a Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church in Lagos.
The announcement was made during a thanksgiving service on Sunday at the church’s headquarters in Lagos, held in memory of his late mother, Esther Adeleke.
Daniel, known for his outspoken views, took to social media to express his disapproval of the donation.
He argued that while giving to the church is commendable, donating such a substantial amount in a country where millions are grappling with poverty and starvation is inappropriate.
“Giving to the church is fine, but donating over a billion to any church, in a country where millions are starving & struggling to survive doesn’t seem right.
Davido’s dad should’ve used about 80% of that money to create employment opportunities,” Regha said.
The criticism has stirred different reactions online, with opinions sharply divided.
Some agree with Regha’s view, questioning the priorities of those with wealth in a nation facing economic challenges, while others defend Adeleke’s decision as a matter of personal choice and religious conviction.
One user, Watchman, responded, “For a man to give to the church, you have no idea what he has gained from fellowship there.”
Another user, HSPR, dismissed the donation as a mere show of wealth, saying, “It’s all for show off ..”
On the other hand, some took a different view. Edvin stated, “Poor people always have good opinions on everything,” implying that the criticism comes from a place of envy or lack of understanding.
Luklex added, “You’re right. A billion naira is a lot to be given to a church. Misplaced priorities.”
However, Pogba Jr. offered a different perspective, noting the irony of the situation: “Poor man telling a rich man what to do, the irony!”
