Residents of Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, are living in fear following a violent assault by armed hoodlums that has left one dead and another critically injured.
According to reports, the attackers launched a brutal assault on the community on the night of September 11, 2024, leading to a fierce gun battle with the local security team. The hoodlums, who had been terrorizing the area with persistent attacks, targeted and looted properties, causing widespread panic among the residents.
Miss Ugochi Agbanyi succumbed to severe injuries inflicted by the attackers, while her brother, Uche Agbanyi, remains in critical condition at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri (FUTHO). Villagers, speaking under anonymity, described the tragic events, revealing that the attackers not only inflicted harm on their victims but also snatched a motorcycle and injured its owner during their escape.
The confrontation with the local security outfit forced the assailants to retreat into the bushes near Nworie River, but their escape was marked by further violence and destruction. The local community, once considered peaceful, is now gripped by fear and confusion, with residents unable to safely visit their farms or find solace in their homes.
In a poignant statement, a local villager expressed frustration and desperation: "Our community, which was once peaceful, is now engulfed in terror. We call on the Imo State Government and security agencies to intervene and protect us from these relentless attacks."
Efforts to obtain a response from the State Police Command's spokesperson, Mr. Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful before press time. The situation remains dire as the community awaits further action to address the escalating violence.
