Former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and recent Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief George Moghalu, has announced his intention to run for the Anambra governorship in the 2025 elections, now representing the Labour Party (LP).
In a press conference held in Nnewi, Moghalu made a bold commitment to serve a single term if elected, arguing that four years is adequate time for any dedicated governor to effect meaningful change. “Anything that a governor cannot achieve in four years is unlikely to be accomplished in eight. Only an unprepared leader would suggest that eight years are necessary to make a significant impact,” he asserted.
Moghalu's campaign centers around restoring public trust in governance, underscoring that a loss of confidence from the populace is the worst fate for any administration. He remarked on the crucial need for accountability and integrity in leadership.
Addressing speculation regarding a potential run for the vacant Anambra South senatorial seat—left open following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah—Moghalu firmly clarified, “I will be contesting for governor next year, not the Senate.”
Having recently resigned from the APC, Moghalu officially joined the Labour Party on October 1, 2024. He expressed confidence that the LP aligns perfectly with his vision for Anambra and provides the right platform for his gubernatorial ambitions after consulting with his supporters, political allies, family, and friends.
In a scathing critique of the current administration led by Governor Charles Soludo, Moghalu stated, “Anambra is in dire need of redemption, as Soludo has not delivered on his promises. The state suffers from inadequate infrastructure, and the security situation has deteriorated significantly. We cannot afford any further failures. What he couldn’t achieve in four years, he certainly won’t accomplish in eight. Anambra doesn’t require eight years for development.”
Moghalu’s declaration sets the stage for what promises to be a highly contested race in the upcoming gubernatorial elections, with the Labour Party now positioned as a key contender in the political landscape of Anambra State.
