Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his elation over a ruling from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that granted Nigeria three points and three goals in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, pushing the team closer to AFCON 2025 qualification.
The Disciplinary Board’s decision, made on Saturday, determined that Libya’s football federation had breached multiple regulations, awarding Nigeria a 3-0 victory for the abandoned Matchday 4 encounter originally set for October 15 in Benghazi. The ruling cited violations of Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, as outlined in a statement by Disciplinary Board Chairman Ousmane Kane.
In addition to forfeiting the match, Libya has been fined $50,000, payable within 60 days. The decision leaves the Super Eagles leading Group A with 10 points from four games, four points ahead of Benin Republic. Rwanda sits in third place with five points, while Libya lags in last with a single point, effectively ruling them out of qualification.
The dispute erupted after the Nigerian team cited security concerns following an extended delay at Al-Abraq airport outside Benghazi. The Libyan Football Federation accused Nigerian officials of being uncooperative, alleging similar treatment of the Libyan team in Nigeria.
Reacting on social media, Troost-Ekong celebrated the ruling, writing
Nigeria’s upcoming qualifier against Benin Republic in Abidjan on November 14 could seal their place in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, with only a draw or win required for qualification. The tournament is scheduled for December 2025 through January 2026.
