The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a driver from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Afeez Adegbola, for allegedly diverting 10,000 litres of petrol intended for official distribution.
The state commandant, Mr. Igbalawole Sotiyo, revealed the arrest during a press briefing on Saturday in Osogbo. He explained that the suspect was apprehended alongside two motor boys on Friday at approximately 8:21 PM while operating the NNPCL truck.
According to Sotiyo, Adegbola loaded 40,000 litres of petrol at the Pinnacle Distribution Depot in Eleko, Lagos State, with the waybill indicating the delivery was destined for the NNPCL Mega Station in Osogbo. Following a tip-off, NSCDC officers tracked the truck, which bore the registration number AGG 959 XA, and found that only 30,000 litres had been delivered to the filling station.
The driver was arrested while attempting to discharge the remaining 10,000 litres at the TEMPOLA filling station in Ikirun, located in the Ifelodun Local Government Area. During interrogation, Adegbola confessed that while the full load was meant for the NNPCL Mega Station, he had been instructed to deliver only 30,000 litres and divert the remaining 10,000 to a private station in Ikirun.
Sotiyo condemned the act as a form of economic sabotage, declaring, “This is a blatant theft against the state. These individuals are engaging in acts that undermine national interests.” He emphasized that the NSCDC is committed to cracking down on those who sabotage the distribution of petroleum products and urged NNPCL managers and supervisors nationwide to collaborate with the agency to hold offenders accountable.
