A devastating fire on Saturday afternoon razed significant portions of the former JFM building in Effurun, Delta State, including the Current FM radio station housed within the premises.
The blaze, which started around 7 p.m., quickly consumed the four-story building, leaving it smoldering into the evening. The cause of the fire remains unknown at the time of reporting, although preliminary investigations suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault.
Delta State Fire Service officials arrived on the scene but struggled to contain the flames after running out of water. Shell Fire Service joined later in the evening, but the damage was already extensive. Police officers were present to maintain order and prevent looting.
Moses Samuel, Chairman of Current FM, confirmed the incident in an emotional interview at the scene. He narrated how staff on duty were preparing for the 7 p.m. news broadcast when the fire was first noticed in the administration office, believed to have been sparked by a power surge affecting an air conditioning unit.
“We suspect the inverter system automatically switched when power was restored, creating a surge that overloaded our 30KVA regulator and triggered the fire. Despite using extinguishers initially, the fire escalated rapidly,” Samuel explained.
He expressed frustration over the delay in the fire service response, stating, “I called the fire service around 7:05 p.m., but they arrived close to 9 p.m. By then, the fire had already devastated the property.”
Samuel lamented the total loss of equipment and resources but expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. “We’ve lost everything except human lives, and for that, we thank God. Properties can be replaced, but lives cannot,” he said.
The chairman appealed for support from the Delta State Government, local councils, and philanthropists to help rebuild the station and resume operations. “We call on good-hearted individuals and organizations to assist us in getting back on our feet. Insurance claims take time, but we are determined to return to business as soon as possible,” Samuel added.
Officials from the Uvwie Local Government, including Chairman Hon. Anthony Ofoni, and other community leaders were present to support efforts to control the fire and assist the victims.
Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
