A fully loaded petrol tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) burst into flames in Ijabe, a community in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, causing widespread panic and disrupting activities in the area.
The incident occurred on the highway linking Osun and Kwara states, leaving motorists stranded as the resulting fire caused a major gridlock. Many travellers were forced to turn back, while residents of the area scrambled to safety amid fears of a potential explosion.
An eyewitness, Jamiu Opeyemi, described the scene as chaotic, with both residents and commuters desperately seeking alternative routes.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the incident, stating that the cause of the fire remained unknown.
“The fire has blocked the road, caused significant obstruction to vehicular movement, and instilled panic among residents, travellers, and nearby farmers,” Adeleke said.
Efforts to contain the situation were ongoing at the time of the report, as emergency responders worked to clear the highway and restore normalcy to the affected area.
