A fire outbreak at a section of the Modern Timber Market in Enugu on Saturday evening was successfully extinguished by the combined efforts of the Enugu State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service.
The inferno, which started around 6 p.m., caused significant damage to a stretch of stalls in the market before firefighters arrived to combat the blaze.
Enugu State Fire Service Director and Chief Fire Officer, Okwudiri Ohaa, confirmed that there were no casualties. He attributed the swift containment of the fire to the quick response of the state fire station located within the market and reinforcements from the Federal Fire Service.
“Four fire trucks and a water tanker, alongside personnel from both services, worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control,” Ohaa stated. “Due to the way the stalls are constructed, a line of shops was badly affected, but we successfully extinguished the fire and remain on-site to ensure there is no resurgence.”
He expressed gratitude to the Federal Fire Service for their support in preventing further damage to the market.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing as traders assess the losses incurred.
