Tragedy struck on Saturday evening as a boat capsized in the River Benue, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals. The victims were crossing from Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) to Odenyi in the Nasarawa honeypot LGA of Nasarawa State after attending activities at the Ocholonya market.

Hon. Melvin Ejeh, Chairman of Agatu LGA, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, revealing that the victims were on their way back to their village in Nasarawa State when the accident occurred. "Over 20 bodies have been recovered, and rescue operations are still ongoing," Ejeh stated.

Initial reports suggest that the cause of the capsizing was linked to poor visibility due to obstructing river shrubs. The sailor reportedly failed to see the trees in the water, leading to a collision that caused the canoe to crash and overturn. The search for additional survivors is ongoing, with local authorities and rescue teams working to recover any remaining bodies.
