A Nigerian man has shared a disturbing account of police abuse, alleging that he and his friend were kidnapped and assaulted by officers who accused them of being "yahoo boys" (internet fraudsters) based solely on their appearance.

The harrowing incident, which took place at a suya spot in Ife, was described in a post shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

According to the victim, the ordeal began around 8 p.m. when he and his friend visited a suya spot at Powerline Junction. The two were reportedly approached by officers of the Nigerian Police Force, who accused them of being involved in internet fraud due to their “fresh” appearance. The officers confiscated their phones and conducted a search, but found no incriminating evidence.

When the man questioned the officers about their alleged offense, the police allegedly responded, “You are too fresh to not be a yahoo boy.” The situation escalated when the man inquired why they were being taken to a remote area instead of a police station. In response, the officers brutally assaulted him, breaking two toes and a toenail. He also claimed he was struck with a rifle and kicked with jungle boots.

The two men were then taken to a Point of Sale (POS) agent in Sabo around 1 a.m., where they were forced to withdraw all the money in their accounts, which the officers allegedly seized.

The victim shared that the officers threatened further violence, saying, “You should thank your stars we’re in a good mood. Otherwise, we could have planted drugs on you, emptied your accounts, and still shot you—just because we can.”

By the time he returned home around 3 a.m., the emotional toll of the abuse was clear. His friend, fearing further profiling, cut off his dreadlocks the next day, while the victim continues to experience PTSD, particularly when passing a suya spot at night.

In his post, the victim expressed his disillusionment with the police, stating, "The Nigerian Police Force is a valid reason for any reasonable person to pack their bags and leave this country if they can. Patriotism to Nigeria? Talmbout what?”

The account has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for an investigation into the officers involved and greater accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.
