In a stern warning to social media users, Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasized that raining direct curses on someone online constitutes cyberbullying, a criminal offense punishable by law.
Adejobi’s statement, made via X on Friday, serves as a reminder to Nigerians to be mindful of their online behavior.
He clarified that cyberbullying, distinct from defamation, is a serious offense that can lead to prosecution.
His words: “Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not expression of freedom or criticism. And cyberbullying, which is even different from defamation, is a criminal offence and punishable. Be guided.”
The police spokesperson’s warning comes amid the war mood of activist community in the country after the arrest and incarcerated one Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide.
She was said to have been ‘abducted’ in a Gestapo-like manner by operatives from her home at Bariga area of Lagos.
Her detention stemmed from candid remarks criticising police misconduct, of which she herself had been a victim.
“Surprisingly, Olamide Abiodun was abducted on Friday, December 13, 2024. Olamide, who is a registered and licensed nurse was arrested and detained over allegation of insulting the Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi,” Sahara Reporters had quoted a source as saying.
