Tragedy struck on Friday as a 35-year-old man, Tunji Jimoh, reportedly died under controversial circumstances while in police custody at the state command headquarters. His death has sparked widespread concern and demands for justice from the community.
Jimoh, a native of the Erubu/Asunnara area in Balogun Fulani, Ilorin, was detained over a debt of ₦220,000 owed to a friend whose brother is a police officer. Sources revealed that Jimoh was arrested on Friday by a team of officers, including the creditor's brother, and taken to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the command headquarters.
“He was denied bail, and his parents were forced to leave the station late on Friday. By Saturday morning, they were informed of his death,” a family source disclosed. Allegations have since surfaced that Jimoh was tortured to death during his detention.
The Kwara State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday. “The state police command is aware of the unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri on December 20, 2024,” Toun stated.
The police further revealed that Jimoh had been invited for questioning over accusations of obtaining money under false pretense. “A discreet investigation into the incident has commenced to determine the cause of death, and no stone will be left unturned in pursuing justice,” the statement promised.
The case has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups and members of the Erubu/Asunnara community, who are calling for an independent probe into Jimoh’s untimely death.
While investigations are ongoing, questions linger over the handling of the case, with many questioning the role of the creditor’s brother in the chain of events that led to Jimoh’s detention and death.
