A recent review of the government’s public payments portal, Govspend, has revealed that ₦176 million was expended on Vice President Kashim Shettima's official trip to Côte d'Ivoire. The investigation, conducted by SaharaReporters, details a significant expenditure of $117,524 for his journey to Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire, in January 2024.
Shettima, who departed Abuja on February 7, 2024, traveled to Côte d'Ivoire to attend the semi-final of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced South Africa. The trip, according to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, was made at the direction of President Bola Tinubu.
The statement emphasized that Shettima’s presence was aimed at rallying national support for the Super Eagles. “The visit serves as a powerful call for national unity and support,” it read, urging Nigerians to support the team in their crucial match.
The match, held at Stade De la Paix in Bouaké, ended in a thrilling victory for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles defeating South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
Additionally, on February 24, 2024, a further $93,004 (approximately ₦86.7 million) was allocated for the Vice President's trip to Liberia, adding to the growing expenditure for his international engagements. These revelations have sparked discussions about the cost of such diplomatic trips, particularly in light of Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
