Five passengers sustained serious injuries in a road accident on the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway, prompting a swift rescue operation by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed details of the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA.
The accident, which occurred at Iyana-Era, inward Agbara, involved a speeding T4 commercial bus (registration number LSD 668 YE) colliding with a stationary LT commercial bus (BDG 728 YE) that was loading passengers. Preliminary investigations revealed that the T4 bus lost control after its brakes failed, slamming into the parked LT bus.
LASTMA personnel quickly responded to the scene, rescuing three male and two female passengers with severe injuries. The injured individuals were promptly transported to Eva-Life Hospital near Iyana-Era for urgent medical care.
Officers from the Ijanikin Police Division also supported the rescue efforts, ensuring order and safety during the operation.
Expressing his sympathies, Mr. Bakare-Oki wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery. He underscored the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly for braking systems, to prevent such accidents.
"Drivers must ensure thorough vehicle inspections before embarking on journeys, whether within Lagos or beyond," Bakare-Oki advised, emphasizing safety as a shared responsibility on the roads.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of vehicle neglect and the importance of cautious driving.
