Singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, remains in police detention despite a bail order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, December 23. This development has sparked concerns from his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who accused the police of ignoring the court’s directive.
Speed Darlington was re-arrested on November 27 by the Nigerian police in Owerri, Imo State, for allegedly jumping bail. The singer’s initial arrest occurred in October following a petition filed against him by fellow artist Burna Boy.
According to findings, the court granted Speed Darlington unconditional bail. His legal team was instructed to forward the ruling to the police legal department, which would then communicate it to the Force Investigation Department (FID) for compliance. Despite completing this process, the police have yet to act on the order, leaving the singer in custody.
Adeyanju expressed frustration, stating that the police’s non-compliance undermines the rule of law. "All necessary steps have been taken to ensure compliance with the court's decision, yet the police continue to detain him unlawfully," he said.
As of December 27, Speed Darlington will have spent a month in detention since his re-arrest, further raising concerns about his prolonged incarceration without legal justification. Efforts to reach the police for a statement on the matter have so far been unsuccessful.
The singer’s legal team continues to push for his release, emphasizing the importance of adherence to judicial rulings in upholding justice.
