The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Ikoyi, Lagos, has successfully arrested an apprentice and his partner-in-crime, who allegedly stole over N250 million worth of cement and construction materials from their employer to fund their gambling addiction.

The suspects, Ezekiel Taiwo and Rahman Airat, have been charged before the Federal High Court in Lagos on multiple counts, including conspiracy, embezzlement, fraudulent conversion, stealing, and money laundering.

In a statement released on Saturday, PSFU spokesman Ovie Ewhubare revealed that the arrest followed a petition filed by the employer, Jimoh Atofolaki, who accused Taiwo, an apprentice working at the Osogbo branch of his company, of diverting company goods. The stolen items included bags of cement and various other building materials, all amounting to a staggering N250 million.

Investigations uncovered that Taiwo, in collaboration with Airat, sold off the stolen goods and used the proceeds to fuel their gambling activities.

The PSFU Commissioner, Okunade Nurat, used the incident as a warning to business owners. "We strongly advise business owners to conduct thorough background checks on their employees to prevent such fraudulent acts," he stated.

This case echoes a similar incident from 2019, when a 20-year-old apprentice, Kosi Nnamani, was arrested for stealing goods worth N1.94 million from his employer. Nnamani was subsequently arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates' Court.
