Good Morning this Afternoon
On my way to work this morning, i experienced something most, if not all of us residing in Lagos experience regularly, although, i must confess, that was my first experience.
I took a bus en route CMS from Kilo Bus Stop and on our way, close to Masha Bus Stop some men (popularly called ‘Agberu’ which is a local name for Tout) stopped the bus demanding some form of payment from the driver, I don’t really know what the payment was for, but I gathered the Amount was 300 Naira after having paid loading fee, although he argued he actually paid the said amount to someone else (another Agberu) at the Kilo bus stop. Arguments followed with the guy (Agberu) insisting the driver pay the amount again and the driver refusing to oblige saying that he has paid up to 600 naira that morning, this continued for long and eventually led to the disembarking of the entire passenger on board by the ‘Agberu’
The passengers were left stranded in an area that is relatively difficult getting a vehicle/bus to convey them to CMS which was our initial destination that morning.
A similar incident occurred yesterday on my way back from work at Lekki round about where a guy (this time they were on uniform) demanded security fee (I find this hilarious) from the bus driver, now tell me, what are they actually securing, the driver, the bus/vehicle or the passengers on board?
Despite efforts made to rid the streets of these set of men who go about harassing people going about their normal business, they still remain and now even more dominant and the government seem undisturbed about this development so it wouldn’t be totally untrue if i say that the government is aware and support their activities
My question is, what can we as affected citizens do to rid ourselves of these ‘termites’ who have made it a point of duty to make life miserable and uncomfortable for us?
I need to know
