A group of adolescent girls, aged between 10 and 15 years, in Sokoto State have formed an Anti-Rape Vanguard.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the girls have also organised a sensitisation meeting on segxwal abuse and HIV/AIDS at Tangaza Local Government after a peer education training. The meeting followed the training on the vices by the Association for Better Community Health in collaboration with Global Fund for Women. The training was organised for 20 adult women and 30 adolescent girls from Binji and Tangaza Local Governments on reproductive health.Another fall out of the training was the formation of the vanguard’s chapter in each of the 23 local governments of the state. The District Head of Binji, Alhaji Usman Abdulwahab, represented by Alhaji Sada Usman pledged sustained support and cooperation to ensure reduction in the incidences of rape.
“We will also make sure that the culprits are brought to book. I am however urging women to always report cases to the authorities, especially the traditional rulers and policy makers.
“This is to enable the government to be aware of the magnitude of the problem to take the necessary actions to stop the ugly incidences,” he added. The Executive Director of the association, Haajiya Hajara Momodu, said that “at least one child is raped every week in Sokoto State and hence increases the spread of HIV/AIDS.”
“There is therefore the need for all women to be alert and report all cases so that the victims can be managed accordingly,” she added
