For allegedly threatening his life, a man murders his friend
Residents of 30, Burma Road, Sabongari, Kano, woke up last Tuesday and found the body of Emeka Odoh, 35, stone dead inside a local eatery in front of the compound. He was hacked to death by his friend and co-worker, Chinedu John Akpamgbo, 22, a native of Isiuzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Akpamgbo narrated how he accomplished that with macabre relish: “I carried the digger and hit him on the head once and I stood there until he died. My intention was to kill him and now that he is dead, I have rest of mind. I killed him at about 12.30 am and I opened the gate and left the compound. I am satisfied that Emeka is dead and I have no regrets.”
Akpamgbo and the late Emeka were attendants at a local eatery, popularly known as Nwanyi Oba restaurant and owned by one Mrs Caroline Chukwulobe. For eight months, they slept in the restaurant after the day’s work, sharing a mattress. They were not buoyant enough to rent an apartment.
Tunde, one of their colleagues, explained: “I woke up at about 6a.m. that Tuesday and swept the compound. At about 6.30 a.m, I found out that the shop was not yet opened. Emeka and Chinedu slept in the shop last night. I left them at about 10.30 p.m. They were then in a good mood. After sweeping the compound and the two friends were yet to open the door of the restaurant, I decided to open the door and wake them up. But to my utter surprise, when I got inside the restaurant, I discovered the body of Emeka with blood all over and a digger beside him.”
Tunde immediately shut the door and raised an alarm which attracted residents.
The people, thereafter, invited the Police.
A police team led by No Man’s Land Divisional Police Officer, Superintendent of Police, Shu’aibu Bello, arrived the scene of the incident. In his words: “We were making arrangements to receive the Commissioner of Police on official tour to Sabon Gari, but we had to put every other issue on hold because of the incident. When we got to the place, we asked questions, removed the body of Emeka and deposited it at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.”
The Police interaction with members of the public revealed that the suspected killer has a relative at Gezawa, Kano. With the help of Mrs Chukwulobe, the cops traced Akpamgbo to Gezawa and within two hours, he was arrested.
Akpamgbo claimed he carried out the killing because the deceased threatened ‘‘to kill me with a sword’’.
The police, who were still interrogating Akpamgbo late last week have vowed to prosecute him for the heinous crime he committed.
Mrs. Chukwulobe, owner of the local eatery where the incident occurred said she was bewildered over the incident. “I have never, in any way, noticed the two of them quarrelling. I don’t know what came over that boy, Chinedu. Emeka was a good man. He was a quiet and gentle man. He had no problem with anyone and our customers were fond of him. If he (Akpamgbo) claims the deceased wronged him, he never complained to me.”
