The contraceptives were handed out to an estimated 10,000 people attending the African National Congress’s centenary party.
But now the Treatment Action Campaign, which fights for better HIV and Aids treatment, has said some of the condoms appear to be ‘defective’.
The charity’s Sello Mokhalipi told the City Press newspaper that it had received complaints the condoms were ‘porous’, forcing embarrassed government leaders to recall the entire batch.
Spokesman Jabu Mbalula said that anyone who had already used the condoms should have ‘no reason to panic’.
South Africa has the highest number of people with HIV and Aids in the world.
In 2009, it was estimated that 5.9million people were carriers of the disease.
