Tribunesports gathered that some of the athletes refused to collect their allowances saying that they ought to have been paid by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in pound sterling like their counterparts at the Games.
Tribunesports also gathered that the athletes for the track and field events have collected their allowances as each of them was said to have been paid 1,700 dollars.
Our source however, revealed that the powerlifters in the team were yet to collect theirs at the time of filing this report. One of the athletes told Tribunesports in London that the protest was to ensure justice and fair play.
“Why should we be paid in dollars? None of the athletes who went to London 2012 main Olympics won a medal yet, they were paid 2,400 pounds each. Here we are, we have made Nigeria proud by wining gold medals here and those at the helm of affairs only felt we should be paid in dollars. Why the disparity for goodness sake? It is unfair,” said one of the athletes, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, none of the officials of Team Nigeria could be reached for comments at the time of filing this report.
No wonder our sportsmen and women waste no time in dumping our national flag at the slightest opportunity. Heroes and heroines are not fully recognized for their efforts and when they eventually are, it is done in a haphazard manner. Please, whoever is concerned should compensate these athletes accordingly by meeting their demands; they have done us proud to be marginalized against.
