Unknown gunmen in two separate attacks in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital shot dead two chieftains of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) from southern Borno senatorial district and Shehuri ward of the metropolis.

chieftains are Ibrahim Usman Gula, PDP zonal Vice chairman of Southern Borno Senatorial District and Hajiya Gambo, the PDP women leader of Shehuri ward of Maiduguri metropolis.

An official of PDP, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that the gunmen trailed Mr Gula and Hajiya Gambo to their respective residences, before they were shot dead.

“They were killed in cold blood near the Maiduguri International Hotel (MAIH) and Shehuri ward of the Maiduguri metropolis, before the Joint Task Force (JTF) later cordoned the areas to prevent further attacks and killings” he said.

The remains of the slain party officials have already been buried according to Islamic rites at the popular Gwange cemetery in Maiduguri.

Speaking on what could have led to their killings, the PDP official said: “prior to their killings by the unknown gunmen, both of them actively participated at the Town Hall meeting with President Good luck Jonathan last Friday at the multipurpose Hall of the Government House over the Boko Haram insurgency and the need to withdraw the JTF from Borno state.

“Security agents must work assiduously to unravel the circumstance that led to the killing of these PDP officials at their residences.”
The killings happened three days after President Jonathan visited Borno state where he challenged the Borno elders to unmasked the dreaded fundamentalists else they will leave long with the wave of attacks Maiduguri is passing through in recent time which has brought economic activities to its knees.
