Mom Chen Wei has begged doctors to please help remove her son, Xiao Wei's tail. Little Xiao was born with spina bifida, which is the cause of the strange growth. But why hasn't this family received the help they need?
As it turns out, doctors can't really operate on 7-month-old Xiao, whose condition is specifically called myelomeningocele, in which the tail just protrudes out of the body and forms a "tail" with spinal matter in it.
The U.K.'s Sun reports that doctors say they can't just remove the tail because it will just keep growing. "If we cut it off, it will simply grow again. We need to repair the spinal canal first to stop it reoccurring," surgeon Huang Chanping said.
I feel HORRIBLE for this poor mom! I can't even imagine dealing with this condition, and what life must be like for her and little Xiao! Thankfully, spina bifida can be prevented by taking folic acid, and I know that as moms-to-be here in the States, we take this with our pre-natal pills and normally with certain foods. I understand the doctors' hesitation, but this baby needs to receive treatment ASAP. If the tail is still growing, it can pose a huge threat later on.
My prayers are with this mom, and I hope that her little baby can get the help he needs and soon!
