In a bizarre family drama that has stunned residents of a rural community in Abia State, an 80-year-old man has filed for divorce from his 70-year-old wife and reportedly orchestrated her arrest over a five-year-old poisoning allegation.
Human rights activist Ochiegbu Marvelous, who has been following the case, said the elderly man approached a high court in Abia State last week to file the divorce, while also alleging that his wife had tried to poison him five years ago—a claim that led to her brief detention at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).
According to Marvelous, the situation took an even stranger turn when the man allegedly sold 20 plots of land “just to deal with” his wife. When their son, believed to be in his 40s, challenged his father over the unfolding chaos, the octogenarian reportedly included the young man’s name in the legal petition, accusing him of kidnapping.
“Yesterday, my team and I secured the release of the woman from the state SCIID. The claim that she tried to poison him five years ago was clearly unfounded,” Marvelous said in a social media post. “This is a deeply disappointing case. To accuse a son with no questionable background of kidnapping simply for defending his mother is appalling.”
The human rights advocate expressed frustration over what he described as community members enabling the patriarch’s actions, stating, “Some of my village people and trouble are like five and six.”
He, however, commended the Abia State Police Command, particularly officers at the SCIID, for their professionalism and transparency in handling the sensitive matter.
“This could have escalated badly, but the police were firm, fair, and factual,” he added.
The unusual case has sparked widespread reaction, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief over the extent of the man's actions and questioning the motive behind the vendetta against his own family.
