Several residents of the Ayedun area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, have bemoaned the perennial crisis of floods that befalls them year after year.
“Many of our roads and houses are destroyed whenever it rains heavily,” said one of the area’s residents, adding, “We lose properties worth millions of naira. Even some landlords have become tenants because the flooding has made them to abandon their homes.”
SaharaReporters spoke to business owners in the area who reported massive losses of business. “Akure is not the only town in this country where flooding happens, but we’re praying that the [Ondo] state government rally to our aid to tackle the problem head on,” one businessman said.
Other residents said the floods have not only displaced them from their homes but also wreaked havoc on farmlands, making life unbearable.
Most of the residents echoed the sentiment that the government should do something to remedy the intractable flooding crisis. “We should not be facing the hardship alone,” said Abimbola Adebayo, adding that she and her husband had lost such valuables as furniture, clothes, certificates, food, and electronic equipment.
Another resident, Ayotunde Oyelusi, stated that he left the area after losing a 12-room apartment to the flood a few years ago.
One parent called on the state government to take pity on the plight of commuters in the area, including school children, adding that the area is an important link to other major areas of Akure.
An Akure-based environmental expert told SaharaReporters that the flooding crisis could be addressed if the government completed canalization projects that were long abandoned.

You are very WRONG - watch the news. Many people lose their lives in floodings around the world. In China, the floods knocked down houses. In some places the floods submerged buildings. The only difference is that our flooding problems are as a result of non existent drainage systems and not unpredictable weather!
