A self-confessed nagging wife was arrested and locked in a cell for 17 hours after being accused of controlling behaviour because she asked her gym-obsessed husband for more help around the house.

Valerie Sanders, 58, said that she begged her bodybuilder husband Michael, also 58, to clean the patio doors, hoover their home and workout less as well as stop shopping at Aldi or Lidl.

She also claims that he took steroids - killing their sex life - and couldn't bear to touch his muscly body saying: 'It was like cuddling an ironing board'.

Mrs Sanders, from Catterick, North Yorkshire, was arrested and ended up facing charges of controlling behaviour - but her case was thrown out on Tuesday.

The case was meant to begin at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday but was thrown out before a jury was selected, with Mrs Sanders' not guilty plea being accepted in exchange for a two-year restraining order.

The mother-of-two called the charges 'outrageous' and said that she was 'treated like a criminal' for asking her husband to do his bit around the house.

She said: 'These laws were brought in to help protect vulnerable people who are suffering in relationships - not to prosecute nagging wives. It's outrageous this ever got to court'.
