The fifth occupant, an orderly, whose name could not be confirmed at press time, also died in the accident.
They were on their way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to board a flight to Lagos, where they were expected to launch the Road Accident Health Insurance Bill today (Thursday) when the vehicle conveying them was involved in an accident.
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune at the national secretariat of the union in Abuja, Alhaji Aliyu Hassan, the FCT secretary of the NURTW, said: “The accident happened along the Airport Road. Actually we don’t know the cause of the accident, but the information at our disposal is that, there was a fatal accident and there were about five of them in the vehicle.
“Four of them died on the spot and the latest information now is the death of the national organising secretary, so none of the five survived in the accident.”
The corpses were later deposited in a mortuary in Abuja.
Plans are already afoot to bury both the president and the secretary in their home towns today.
Hamman, 55, a former policeman, became president of the union in 2003 and was expected to hand over to a new president in 2011 when his second term in office would lapse.
Amoo became the secretary earlier in the year, following the demise of the former secretary.
Commenting on the demise of the top officials of the union, Alhaji Akanni Olohunwa, chairman, Lagos State council of the union, described it as a disaster.
“The death of the president and the secretary is a huge loss to the union. These are people who have done quite a lot to improve the lot of the union. This is not the time for them to die. But being a Muslim, one has to accept it as the will of Allah and pray that the Almighty Allah will grant them eternal rest,” Olohunwa said.
